WHAT IS ENT SURGERY?
ENT (Ear, Nose, and Throat) surgery, also known as Otolaryngology, is a specialised branch of medicine focusing on diagnosing and treating disorders affecting these areas. It encompasses a variety of conditions ranging from sinus issues, hearing and balance disorders to swallowing and voice problems.
COMMON ENT SURGERIES
Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) surgery, a field dedicated to conditions affecting these crucial areas, encompasses an array of surgical procedures, including:
Tonsillectomy: A routine surgery involving the removal of the tonsils - small glands located in the throat - for those suffering from recurrent tonsillitis or sleep apnoea.
Adenoidectomy: More often for children than adults, this removes the adenoids – gland-like tissues behind the nose - when they cause chronic problems like middle ear fluid, mouth breathing or snoring.
Septoplasty & Septorhinoplasty: This corrects a deviated nasal septum, enhancing breathing and overall nasal function.
Inferior turbinoplasty: Reduction of the size of the inferior turbinates, which can contribute to a blocked nose
Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS): Performed to clear blocked sinuses, this operation can significantly improve symptoms of sinusitis, including headaches and nasal congestion.
Sleep Apnoea Surgery: Sleep apnoea treatment involves palate surgery, such as Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP) or barbed repositioning pharyngoplasty (BRP), which aims to stiffen or reposition the palate muscles to improve the airway and breathing during sleep.
Thyroidectomy: Involves the partial or complete removal of the thyroid gland, typically performed to treat thyroid disorders such as cancer, large nodules, and hyperthyroidism that have not responded well to medical treatment.
Parotidectomy: Removes the parotid gland, the largest of our salivary glands, due to the presence of tumours.
