Ear Infection
What is an Ear Infection?
An ear infection can occur in any of the three different parts of the ear: the outer ear, the middle ear, and the inner ear. The most frequent infection affects the external ear canal and can occur in otherwise healthy individuals, often related to water sports and the use of cotton buds/Q-tips.
Symptoms of an Ear infection
Otitis Externa: Infection of the external ear canal usually presents with symptoms such as ear pain, discharge, a blocked feeling, and decreased hearing. It may also cause the outer ear to appear red and scaly at the opening of the ear canal.
Otitis Media: Infection of the middle ear space is often the result of an upper respiratory tract infection, causing the build-up of fluid in the middle ear. Symptoms can include a blocked ear sensation, ear pain, discharge, and more subtle signs such as irritability, crying, fever, and a general feeling of being unwell in young children.
Treatment of Ear Infections
Otitis Externa: Treatment primarily involves topical antibiotic ear drops and ear canal cleaning. Dr Valerie Tay will use a microscope to clean the ear canal of pus and bacteria, aiding the delivery of the topical antibiotics and speeding up the recovery time.
Acute Otitis Media: Treatment usually involves a course of oral antibiotics, often coupled with nasal decongestants. If fluid behind the eardrum persists for more than two months, a simple procedure called a myringotomy with grommet tube insertion may be required to drain the fluid.

Ear Wax
What is Ear Wax?
Did you know your ears are self-cleaning for the most part? However, sometimes ear wax can build up and cause a blockage, especially if you use hearing aids or have a narrow or crooked ear canal. When ear wax can't find its way out and naturally clear, it makes hearing difficult.
Symptoms of Ear Wax
Ear wax is a natural substance our bodies produce, but excessive build-up can lead to various discomforts and issues. These may include:
A sensation of fullness in the ear
Earache
Difficulty hearing in severe cases
Treatment of Ear Wax
There are several solutions. Ear syringing is a simple and popular method where water is propelled into your ear canal to loosen the wax. However, this blind method may harm your eardrum or ear canal. Therefore, ENT specialists recommend the removal of ear wax using a microscope for precision. Dr Valerie Tay will either suction out the wax with a micro-suction or use microscopic tools to carefully remove the wax, avoiding accidental damage to your eardrum and ear canal.
